Hayward neighborhoods, schools, and the bridge
The bridge town. State Route 92 and the San Mateo Bridge put the Peninsula across the water instead of around it.
Living in Hayward
One road explains most of Hayward. State Route 92 runs from Half Moon Bay to Hayward and carries the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, which is the longest span across San Francisco Bay. If your work is on the Peninsula, that bridge is why you are looking here.
There is a detail about that road worth knowing before you choose a street. East of Interstate 880, State Route 92 stops being a highway and becomes a surface street, known locally as Jackson Street. And there is no direct connection from 92 to Interstate 580. You get there through Foothill Boulevard, which carries State Route 238. So a map that makes two Hayward addresses look equally convenient can be wrong by a lot.
I'm Chaitali (CeCe) Cherian of KeysWithCeCe, a REALTOR® with eXp Realty and a licensed loan officer, and Hayward is one of the towns I work.
What I bring is the money side. I can be your agent and your loan officer on the same purchase, so one person builds your budget and your offer. When I act in both roles I tell you in writing, and you are always free to use a different lender. Every loan is subject to underwriting approval. NMLS #2590353.
The district reaches past the city line
Hayward Unified serves most of Hayward. It also serves most of Fairview and parts of Castro Valley and Cherryland.
Read that again, because it works in both directions. A home with a Castro Valley address can be in the Hayward district, and the district does not line up neatly with the city boundary anywhere. Buyers comparing a Hayward listing against a Castro Valley one are often not comparing what they think they are.
I confirm the district and the specific schools for any address in writing before you make an offer. I will not tell you which is better. That is not a judgment an agent should be making for you, and it is not mine to make.
Cal State East Bay sits in the hills above the city at 25800 Carlos Bee Boulevard, which shapes the rental market and the traffic in that part of town.
What the homes are here
Hayward is one of the more varied markets of the towns I cover. It runs from the bay flats up into the hills, and what that means in practice is that two homes at the same price can be completely different buys.
Condos and townhomes are a real part of what sells here, and they carry a layer most buyers never check. An association's finances and rules can end your loan on a unit that inspects perfectly, which is why I look at the building and not only the home. That is set out on my condo and townhome page.
Buying your first home? Start on my first-time buyer page. Moving up and selling something at the same time? That timing is the hard part, and it is on selling and buying at the same time.
Getting around from Hayward
Two BART stations, Hayward and South Hayward, so where you buy decides whether the train is a walk, a bus ride or a drive.
The interchange where State Route 92 meets Interstate 880 handles more than 235,000 commuters a day. Caltrans rebuilt it at a cost of $245 million. That number is worth sitting with, because it tells you what the corridor is like at eight in the morning better than any adjective would.
I will not quote you a commute time. Drive it twice before you buy, once at the hour you would really be leaving and once on a Friday.
Castro Valley and San Lorenzo are north, Union City and Fremont south, and the San Mateo Bridge is west.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the San Mateo Bridge commute from Hayward?
State Route 92 carries the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, the longest span across San Francisco Bay, so the Peninsula is across the water rather than around it. The interchange where 92 meets I-880 serves more than 235,000 commuters a day, so the time of day matters enormously. Drive it before you buy.
Which school district serves Hayward?
Hayward Unified serves most of the city, and also most of Fairview and parts of Castro Valley and Cherryland. The district does not line up with the city boundary, so a Castro Valley address can be in the Hayward district. I confirm the district for a specific address in writing before you make an offer.
Does Hayward have BART?
Two stations, Hayward and South Hayward. Which one you are near, and whether it is a walk or a drive, is worth checking for a specific address rather than for the city.
Can I get from Hayward onto I-580 easily?
Not directly from State Route 92. There is no direct connection between the two. You reach I-580 by way of Foothill Boulevard, which carries State Route 238. It is one of the reasons two Hayward addresses that look similar on a map can commute very differently.
